Session Dates (5):
Monday - Friday
August 17th - 21st

Time: 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM

Description: This powerful, hands-on week invites students to become engineers, advocates, and changemakers. Campers will explore meaningful community challenges, meet real experts, and then use Gizmo’s cutting-edge tools to prototype solutions that make a difference.

Days 1–2: Explore & Empathize
Students will be introduced to a variety of pressing community challenges, including:

--> Adaptive Sports & Accessibility – Learn how athletes with disabilities adapt equipment to compete and thrive. Campers will meet Paralympians and coaches, explore adaptive gear firsthand, and discover the engineering behind inclusion.

--> Prosthetics & Human-Centered Design – Visit with the prosthetic technician program at Spokane Falls Community College—the only program of its kind in the Western United States—to learn how prosthetics and adaptive equipment are developed and customized.

--> Water Quality & Environmental Stewardship-- learn about the region's amazing aquifer from our University of Idaho Water Extension partners at IdaH2O, and challenges with keeping our water cleanand available for all.

--> Agriculture, Soil Health & Food Scarcity - Investigate the region's soil health and challenges growing and providing food for all with our University of Idaho 4H Extension partners and regional food banks.

Through guided discussions and activities, students will practice Design Thinking—learning how to empathize, define problems, brainstorm boldly, prototype quickly, and test creatively.

Days 3–5: Design, Build & Prototype
Campers will form teams and “rev up” to tackle a challenge of their choosing. Using Gizmo’s incredible maker resources—3D printing, laser cutting, programming and electronics, and woodshop and fabrication tools--—students will design and build working prototypes that address real-world needs.

By the end of the week, students won’t just understand community challenges—they’ll have designed tangible solutions and gained the confidence to see themselves as capable changemakers in their own communities.

No prior experience required—just curiosity and a desire to make a difference.
