Description:
Create with clay! In Fundamentals of Pottery, students will dive into the timeless art of wheel throwing while learning the essential techniques that potters use to shape clay into bowls, cups, and vessels.
During this immersive expernece over six creative weeks, students will get their hands in the clay and learn how to:
- Center clay on the wheel—the foundational skill of pottery
- Open and pull a cylinder, the starting shape for many vessels
- Shape and refine simple forms like cups and bowls
- Apply studio glazes to bring their pieces to life with color and shine
- Understand the use of the kiln for bisque and glaze firing
Along the way, students will build confidence with key pottery skills—preparing clay, practicing centering, and establishing their throwing technique. By the end of the class, each student can expect to complete 4–5 finished ceramic pieces to keep and enjoy.
All materials are included: studio clay, glazes, firing, and weekly instruction—just bring your curiosity and willingness to get a little muddy!
This course is designed for students with little or no experience on the potter’s wheel, making it a welcoming first step into the world of ceramics. Students may repeat Fundamentals I once before advancing to the Fundamentals II level.
⚠️ Note: Wheel throwing is a physically active process that involves holding steady positions while shaping clay. Because of the strain on hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders, this class may not be suitable for individuals with chronic pain or injuries in those areas.
