Description:
Design it. Print it. Code it. Wear it!
Take your first step into the amazing world of digital making in this fun-filled two-week Taste of Gizmo workshop! Young makers will discover how ideas can travel from a computer screen to a real, 3D-printed creation—and then come to life with code!
Using TinkerCad, students will personalize a custom name badge by adding their name in bold 3D letters and creative design elements. Once their badge is ready, they'll prepare it for the 3D printer and watch as layers of plastic transform their digital design into something they can hold.
But the fun doesn't stop there! Their badge is specially designed to hold a micro:bit—a tiny programmable computer. Using MakeCode, students will learn to code their micro:bit to display a scrolling name, fun messages, icons, and animations, turning their creation into an interactive badge they'll be excited to wear and show off!
Along the way, students will:
🖥️ Personalize a name badge using TinkerCad
🖨️ Learn how 3D printers turn digital designs into real objects
💻 Code a micro:bit using MakeCode block programming
✨ Create scrolling messages, animations, and icons for their badge
🤝 Build confidence through creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving
As they explore the maker journey, students can earn Level 1 Skill Badges in TinkerCad, MakeCode, micro:bit programming, and 3D Printing, along with Character Badges that celebrate creativity, perseverance, curiosity, and teamwork.
If you've ever wondered how inventors, engineers, and designers bring their ideas to life, this is the perfect place to begin. Come design it, print it, code it—and wear your creativity with pride!
There is something fun for both new and returning students to experience--practice in the 3D printing platforms leads to certification at ages 14+.
